The State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things (IoT) for Smart City (SKL-IOTSC) at the University of Macau (UM) has recently held its third SKL-IOTSC Summer Camp for Outstanding University Students, attracting top-performing students from over 20 universities across the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and overseas, according to a Monday statement from the public tertiary education institution.

Designed to blend academic exchange with hands-on learning, the programme featured research activities, expert-led lectures and cultural visits, aiming to offer participants a deeper understanding of smart-city development and unique academic environment of UM, the statement said.

Among the variety of activities held were visits to SKL-IOTSC’s advanced research facilities, where students interacted with researchers and explored cutting-edge technologies. The statement added that academic lectures, delivered by UM professors, covered five key research areas: intelligent sensing and network communication, urban big data and intelligent technology, smart energy, intelligent transportation, and urban safety and disaster prevention.

At the recent opening ceremony, Ma Shaodan, associate director of SKL-IOTSC, emphasised that the annual summer camp is part of the university’s broader initiative to promote study tours that integrate research exposure with cultural understanding. She noted the importance of hands-on engagement and intellectual exchange in helping students identify and pursue their academic passions.
