Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau has become Macau’s first hotel to receive the coveted LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification for Operations and Maintenance (O+M): Existing Buildings, a globally recognised standard awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
A presentation ceremony was held yesterday at the five-star hotel in Nape, where a networking session and keynote speeches were given.
According to a statement by the hotel yesterday, it was officially awarded the LEED Gold Certification under the LEED O+M: Existing Buildings category, making it the first hotel in Macau to achieve this international sustainability milestone.
The certification, developed by the USGBC, assesses how existing buildings are being operated and maintained in key areas such as energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, waste management, and occupant experience.
The recognition placed Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau among more than 197,000 LEED-certified projects across over 180 countries and regions, highlighting its contribution to the global movement aiming for a greener built environment, according to the statement.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of yesterday’s press conference, Rutger Verschuren, Area Vice President, Macau and Hengqin of Artyzen Hospitality Group and General Manager of Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau, said that they are proud to have won the award, being quite an achievement, especially with Artyzen Grand Lapa being the first hotel in Macau to have won the prestigious award.
He added that the achievement was made possible with the right mindset and the support of the hotel’s owners and management company.
“It’s a lot of work. It takes a lot of study and a lot of trial and error sometimes. But at the end of the day, it pays off very well for the environment, but also as an investment for the building,” Verschuren said.
While challenges in the process of getting the award such as finding the best supplier of equipment based on different factors do exist, Verschuren said his staff have proved to be very helpful.
“They really love to make a difference and show that this hotel, although it is old in terms of age, is not an old-fashioned hotel. We may be a classic, but we are very young at heart and we still want to be bold and make a difference in society as this hotel has been done for so many years”, Verschuren said.
Meanwhile, in his speech, USGBC & GBCI North Asia Managing Director Andy To highlighted: “In a city where tradition and transformation are in constant dialogue, Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau offers a rare and powerful statement: that cultural legacy and environmental responsibility are not opposing forces, but natural partners. Rooted in a distinct architectural and emotional history, the property has embraced the rigour of sustainable operations while honouring the soul of Macau’s heritage”.
