Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a statement yesterday that a Hong Kong man attempted to smuggle 88 used smartphones into the mainland via Gongbei checkpoint.
Gongbei Customs announced the case, which was detected last Tuesday, in a statement yesterday, adding that the smuggler is surnamed Lam.
According to the statement, last Tuesday at noon Lam was intercepted by customs officers while entering Zhuhai through the “Green Channel” at the Gongbei checkpoint passenger inspection hall.
The statement said, customs officers noticed his unusually laboured gait while pushing a cart containing a paint bucket, prompting an inspection. The bucket’s abnormal weight and suspicious X-ray images led to its on-site dismantling, revealing 88 used mobile phones sealed in waterproof packaging inside the bucket.
In the statement, Gongbei Customs reminded the public that according to relevant regulations, evading customs supervision by hiding or bringing goods subject to taxes into the mainland constitutes smuggling. If the circumstances are severe enough to constitute a crime, criminal liability will be pursued.
