The Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Committee (CAEAL) intends to control the noise generated by campaign vehicles blaring candidates’ messages during the two-week campaign period, Tong Hio Fong, who heads the committee, said yesterday.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with officials of the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) at the Public Administration Building in Rua do Campo, Tong said his committee acknowledged the level of noise produced by campaign activities had affected residents’ daily lives during campaigning in the previous legislative elections.

Tong, a judge by profession, said both his committee and the DSPA officials believed it would be able to control the volume of the recordings played by the campaign vehicles, adding the eco-officials said they would study how other jurisdictions handle the issue and then submit suggestions to the committee.
