A reception was held yesterday to commemorate “the 75th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relationship between the Republic of Indonesia and the People’s Republic of China” at The Venetian Macao in Cotai, with the event gathering a number of guests and attendees.
Delivering his opening remarks, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the People’s Republic of China Djauhari Oratmangun said that the anniversary of their diplomatic ties was a historical milestone. He also went on to highlight Macau’s important role in fostering people-to-people ties.
Oratmangun noted that Macau is home to Indonesians “who have contributed actively to the city’s service sector and cultural life. We look forward to strengthening Macau’s role as a bridge for cultural diplomacy and as a gateway for cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries”.
“In addition to strong people-to-people ties, our economic engagement with Macau is also steadily growing”, Oratmangun added.
Meanwhile, Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon noted in his speech that “the relationship between Macau and Indonesia has also become closer and stronger since Macau returned to the motherland, especially in the area of economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. Over the past 25 years, Macau has transformed into a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure, thanks to the contributions of people from around the world, including our Indonesian friends”.
Cheong also highlighted the role of Macau’s non-resident workforce from Indonesia, noting that “their work and contributions are much appreciated”. Moreover, to enhance cooperation, Cheong said that the local government suggests the consulate hold more events and activities here, adding: “The Macau government will do its best to facilitate the consulate in conducting its duties”.
Both Cheong and Oratmangun also highlighted the number of visitors to Macau from Indonesia in 2024, which stood at over 180,000.
Following the speeches, cultural performances were held along with a networking event.
At the end of May, according to the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), 7,858 non-resident workers (NRW) from Indonesia were employed in Macau.
