The grassroots New Macau Association (NMA) petitioned Commissioner Against Corruption André Cheong Weng Chon yesterday, urging his officials to investigate the police’s alleged suppression of freedom of assembly by interrupting an event by the group in Taipa last Friday.
Apart from fighting graft, the Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) includes the function of the city’s ombudsman.
A CCAC official accepted the petition on Cheong’s behalf.
Speaking to reporters in the lobby of the Dynasty Plaza building after submitting a petition to a CCAC official, Jason Chao Teng Hei, the group’s vice-president who announced last month that he will quit his NMA membership on March 31, said the group held an event near Flower City Garden in Taipa last Friday afternoon to collect residents’ opinions about its platform for the upcoming legislative elections.
