Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai met with Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng at Government Headquarters yesterday where the two sides exchanged views on key areas and projects for strengthened cooperation between Shanghai and Macau, as well as on jointly serving the nation’s overall development strategy, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement last night.
Welcoming Gong and members of his delegation to Macau during yesterday’s meeting, Sam expressed gratitude to Shanghai for its close attention to the Shanghai-Macau cooperation and its strong support for Macau’s development.
According to the statement, Sam noted that Macau and Shanghai, as core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta city cluster respectively, have long maintained close interactions and a solid foundation for cooperation.
Sam said that Macau possesses the unique advantage brought about by the backing of the motherland and its connection to the world. As a business service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Sam said, Macau features an extensive international network and a good business environment.
Sam also said that Shanghai, as an international financial and technological innovation hub, has strong scientific research capabilities, a well-developed industrial chain, and global influence.
Sam said that with the central authorities’ support, both Shanghai and Macau will embrace greater development opportunities, adding he expects the two sides to seize the opportunities, to continue complementing each other’s strengths, and to advance cooperation with the aim of making new achievements, so that the two cities can jointly make greater contributions to the nation’s overall development.
Meanwhile, after the meeting between Sam and Gong, officials from the two cities signed a number of memoranda aiming to strengthen Shanghai-Macau cooperation in various fields, according to the statement.
