Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai has “recently” convened and chaired the first meeting of a working group tasked with the planning of the establishment of a science and technology research and development industrial park in Macau, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) yesterday.

The statement did not mention when exactly the meeting was held, but it was held at Government Headquarters.

The statement also said that once the government will release the proposed choices of possible locations for the industrial park, it will launch a public consultation on the matter.

The planned industrial park is one of the four future large-scale projects aiming to inject new impetus into Macau’s development for the long term laid out by Sam’s 2025 Policy Address, which he delivered in April.

The four projects comprise the Macau International Integrated Tourism and Cultural Zone, the Macau Science and Technology Research and Development Industrial Park, the Macau International Aviation Hub for the Pearl River West Bank, and the Macau-Hengqin International University City.

During the meeting, according to yesterday’s statement, Sam said that the industrial park will be an important project to improve Macau’s environment for technological innovation and promote the city’s economic diversification.

Sam urged the relevant public entities to advance the planning and establishment of the industrial park in a pragmatic manner, with the aim of accelerating Macau’s high-quality development and appropriate economic diversification.

Sam also said that during the industrial park’s planning and preparatory phases, the government will study the feasibility of drafting relevant pieces of legislation necessary for the establishment and operation of the industrial park.

During the meeting, according to the statement, Secretary for Economy and Finance Anton Tai Kin Ip briefed Sam and other officials about the government’s ongoing planning and preparation for the industrial park’s establishment.

Tai said that the industrial park will become an important engine to support Macau’s appropriate economic diversification.

Tai said that efforts are underway to accelerate the ongoing research and preparatory work, particularly in streamlining the respective administrative procedures.
