Macau recorded a locally transmitted case of chikungunya fever yesterday, raising the total number of local cases so far this year to six, the Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement late last night.

According to the statement, the patient is a 53-year-old local man who lives in Sak I Building on Travessa do Armazém Velho.

The man came down with joint pain in his arms and legs on Friday, before coming down with a rash yesterday. He sought treatment at the Inner Harbour Health Centre, which is located near the Ponte 16 casino-hotel, yesterday afternoon.

He was diagnosed with chikungunya fever by the Health Bureau’s Public Health Laboratory last night.

According to the statement, the patient visited Zhuhai between Thursday and Friday last week. He told the Macau Health Bureau he was not bitten by mosquitoes while in Zhuhai.

The statement said that the man did not travel outside Macau, except Zhuhai, during the incubation period

The statement underlined that the Macau Health Bureau has classified the man’s case as a locally transmitted one after considering his travel history and the time of the onset of his symptoms, as well as its laboratory test results.

Macau recorded this year’s fifth local case of chikungunya fever on September 28. The patient is a 62-year-old local woman, who visited Zhuhai on September 22.

The Macau Health Bureau said at that time that as no chikungunya cases had been reported for a period of time in the places in Zhuhai visited by the woman, it decided to classify her case as a local case in Macau.
