The opening ceremony of the two-day 13th Conference of the Forum of Presidents of the Supreme Courts of Portuguese-speaking Countries and Territories was held in Macau yesterday, where Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai said in a speech that thanks to the firm guarantee of judicial independence under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has transitioned from a new member of the Forum to an active participant and promoter.
The opening ceremony was held at the Services Platform Complex for Commercial and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (aka Forum Macao Complex).
According to a statement by the Macau Final Court of Appeal (TUI), the organiser of the two-day conference, Sam said in his speech that Macau’s independent judicial power and power of final adjudication conferred by the MSAR Basic Law enables Macau to consolidate the rule of law within the legal framework.
Sam said that with the unique advantages of its Chinese-Portuguese bilingualism, Macau has naturally become a bridge connecting China and the Portuguese-speaking world.
According to yesterday’s statement, delegations from the supreme courts of seven Portuguese-speaking countries, namely Angola, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste, led by their presidents or respective representatives are attending the two-day conference.
