This year’s “Run of Hope Macau” at Four Seasons Hotel Macao achieved “record-breaking participation” on Sunday, marking its most successful year since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement that day by the hotel operator.
The event was organised by Four Seasons Hotel Macao in conjunction with The International School of Macao (TIS) and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Macao, and powered by HSBC Life. Kicking off and ending at the 5-star hotel in Cotai, the event featured both a 5.6 kilometre run and a three-kilometre walk.
Over 400 participants laced up for the event, the net proceeds of which will benefit cancer research at Kiang Wu Hospital and care services at the ECF Orphanage, the statement noted.
Other activities at the event included a family fun day combining wellness and celebration and, prior to the run, a warm-up led by a lululemon ambassador, the statement said. There was also an exclusive wellness area at Splash poolside restaurant for participants after the run.
Moreover, the event showed the role of education in community health, with TIS students backing number three of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which according to the UN SDG website is to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.
The initiative was inspired by Canadian athlete, humanitarian and cancer research activist Terry Fox (1958-1981), who lost a leg to cancer. Fox, according to AI chatbot Poe, embarked on a cross-country run called the “Marathon of Hope” with a prosthetic aiming to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
Four Seasons properties across the globe host annual events in support of cancer research and care, according to the statement, with the first “Run of Hope Macau” taking place in 2009.
