The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) hosted a press conference about its upcoming five-month long programme titled “Chinese Culture Performances Season” at the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM).
According to IC Vice President Cheang Kai Meng, “The programme aims to enhance locals’ national self-confidence.”
The programme, according to an introductory presentation by an emcee who spoke to the media on the sidelines of the press conference, will be held from this month to March next year, featuring top productions from national-level art troupes.
Through theatrical performances, community activities, and school exchanges, the programme aims to build a platform for dialogue between Chinese culture and the world, advancing Macau’s goal of establishing itself as a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and other cultures flourish as well, the presentation said.
According to Cheang, the programme aims to preserve and innovate Chinese culture. The performance season will feature four refined theatrical productions and eight exchange performances, complemented by around 50 interactive sessions designed to bring the public closer to Chinese cultural traditions.
Cheang highlighted that the programme is specially tailored to youth engagement to foster ethnic identity and cultural confidence.
Cheang also said that through a fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, the programmes will showcase the charm of Chinese culture in diverse artistic forms.
The programme, according to the emcee’s presentation, aims to clearly demonstrate the continuum of heritage and innovation in Chinese culture.
The programme encompasses both classic national treasures and modern interpretations, utilising diverse forms such as traditional techniques and cross-boundary experiments to present the boundless charm and vibrant vitality of Chinese culture from all perspectives, the emcee said.
According to the presentation, the programme has invited top-tier national troupes including the China National Peking Opera Company, Beijing People’s Art Theatre, China National Opera, and National Theatre of China to present eight refined performances spanning Peking opera, immersive drama, ethnic dance drama, and opera. Classic productions include “A Meeting of Heroes”, “Invoking the East Wind”, “ The Huarong Pass”, and “Farewell My Concubine”, the emcee said.
