Lawmaker-cum-unionist Ella Lei Cheng I urged the government yesterday to pay close attention to the quotas of non-resident workers granted to local companies.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event hosted by the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (commonly known as Gung Luen) in Iao Hon Market Park to celebrate the upcoming Labour Day, Lei, a vice-president of the federation, said that some local workers had asked for her union’s help late last year as they said that after signing employment contracts with a hotel in Taipa, the hotel management later told them that they didn’t need to come to work, without giving any specific reasons.

Lei said that the fewer than 10 locals were originally hired to work in the hotel’s logistics department.
