The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) announced on its official website that it is considering hoisting Standby Signal No.1 (T1) late today.

According to the local observatory, Super Typhoon “Fung-wong” (鳳凰 – “Phoenix”) was located to the east of Luzon in the Philippines last night.

The weather station said in a statement last night that as it expected “Fung-wong” to enter Macau’s 800 km range late today, it would hoist T1 at that time.

According to the weather station’s forecast track last night, after “Fung-wong” enters the northeastern part of the South China Sea, it will gradually turn to a northerly direction, passing about 500 km to the east of Macau tomorrow.

The observatory pointed out that there are still uncertainties regarding the typhoon’s turning position and intensity. It said that it would closely monitor the movement and development of “Fung-wong”, and assess its impact on Macau in due course.

Meanwhile, the bureau said it expected a northeastern monsoon to arrive at the coast of Guangdong last night, adding that, under the combined effect of the monsoon and “Fung-wong”, winds in Macau were expected to be strong today, reaching Force 5 to 6 with gusts.

According to the 12-level Beaufort scale, Force 5 indicates “fresh breeze”, while Force 6 indicates “strong breeze” conditions.

The weather station also forecast the mercury to gradually drop to around 18 degrees Celsius by Thursday, urging the public to pay attention to its latest weather information.

This typhoon chart provided by the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) last night shows the expected track of Super Typhoon “Fung-wong”.
