Tencent in Macau launches ‘TenPay Global Checkout’

Shenzhen-based Tencent Holding Limited announced in a statement yesterday that it has launched a new payment mode, called “TenPay Global Checkout”, enabling merchants outside the Chinese mainland to accept local payments.

The statement pointed out that Weixin Mini Programs are lightweight apps* within Weixin that enable Weixin/WeChat users to shop, pay, and access services without downloading additional apps. 

There are currently over one million monthly active users for Weixin Mini Programs** in markets such as Australia, Japan, Singapore, and New Zealand, with active Mini Programs services available across 92 countries and regions, the statement said.

According to the statement, the “TenPay Global Checkout” set up at the Weixin Mini Program, will help merchants outside the Chinese mainland to accept credit and debit cards – PayNow and BOCPAY(MO) through the new payment mode with their Weixin Official Accounts Platform.

With the single integration of TenPay Global Checkout, users outside of the Chinese mainland can make payments within the app by using the local payment methods they are familiar with, according to the statement. 

The new payment mode’s, according to the statement, rollout begins in Singapore and Macau and will continue to expand elsewhere including Australia, Japan, and New Zealand, with more markets and merchants to follow, enabling convenient payments for global users of the Weixin Mini Program, the statement. 

In the statement, TenPay Global (Singapore) Chief Executive Officer Yang Wenhui said, “TenPay Global Checkout marks an important step in enhancing the local consumer experience. TenPay Global Checkout enables overseas merchants by using the Weixin Mini Program to accept trusted and diversified local payment methods through one unified solution [so that] users benefit from a more convenient and efficient payment experience. TenPay Global Checkout helps merchants improve payment conversion rates, expand their user base, and scale their businesses to serve a broader range of customers.”
