The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that it has reopened the upgraded permanent exhibition at General Ye Ting’s Former Residence after unveiling a bronze statue of the general and presenting new displays that aim to strengthen patriotic education and highlight the general’s historical contributions.

The bureau held a reopening ceremony yesterday at the eponymous residence, the statement said, adding that officiating guests included Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Wallis O Lam, representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government, scholars from Guangdong and Macau, and several descendants of the general, as well as senior officials from the bureau.

In the presence of Secretary O and the Director of the Publicity and Culture Department of the Liaison Office Wan Sucheng, IC President Deland Leong Wai Man accepted a piece of calligraphy written by Yip Ying, the general’s grandson, the statement added, as the artwork will be displayed at the mansion.

According to the statement, the newly unveiled statue depicts the general in uniform, standing resolutely with his gaze fixed forward to reflect his revolutionary conviction that “an army may be deprived of its commander, but a man can never be bereft of his aspiration”.

The upgraded exhibition expands on the previous permanent display, presenting major periods of the general’s life, including his childhood, military career, victories in the Northern Expedition, his self-effacing years in Macau, and the ideals reflected in “Song of the Prisoner”,* the statement added.

Scenes of his family life in the residence are also reproduced to highlight his deep connection with Macau. The venue will join the Xian Xinghai Memorial Museum and Zheng Guanying Memorial Museum in commemorating the patriotic spirit in modern Chinese history, the statement said.

General Ye Ting’s Former Residence is open daily at 76 Rua do Almirante Costa Cabral from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., including public holidays, and is closed on Wednesdays, with free admission and with guided tours in Cantonese offered every Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
