The Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) announced in a statement yesterday that the executive chef working in the food and beverage department of an integrated resort allegedly solicited bribes.

According to the statement, its investigation was triggered by a tipoff which claimed that the executive chef solicited bribes in exchange for recommending individuals for employment, helping them pass probation or supporting contract renewals.

During the investigation, the CCAC discovered that between 2023 and 2024 the executive chef abused his position and took advantage of recruitment opportunities, staff probation assessments and performance appraisals to repeatedly solicit cash or gifts from his “fellow countrymen and subordinates”, the statement noted.

The statement did not elaborate on the nationality of the suspect, and neither did it reveal the name of the resort where the offences were allegedly committed.

The statement added that the alleged kickbacks were given in exchange for successful entry into the company or the renewal of employment contracts.

The chef is suspected of bribe-taking in the private sector, while four other employees involved are suspected of bribe-giving, the statement noted.

The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for follow-up, and the statement said that similar incidents of misconduct in the private sector have been exposed in recent years.

In the statement, the local anti-graft body urged the public to remain wary of corruption, stressing that such behaviour affects employment rights and undermines Macau’s fair business environment.

Residents in general and private-sector employees in particular should always uphold integrity and report any suspected bribery or other illegal practices, adding that people should “not give in” when facing bribery attempts, the statement concluded.
