The “Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts 2025 – Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Category”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), is presenting award-winning and selected works by local artists at its Tap Seac Gallery in Praça do Tap Siac, aiming to highlight the vitality of traditional Chinese arts in Macau.

This year’s exhibition received 161 pieces/sets of artworks submitted by 161 local artists, spanning traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, seal carving and experimental ink art. From these entries, 61 pieces/sets were selected for display, offering a comprehensive overview of the artistic skills, styles and creative directions of local practitioners of Chinese painting and calligraphy.

According to a statement by the bureau last month, the exhibition aims to demonstrate how local artists continue to reinterpret Chinese artistic traditions while injecting new creative energy into the field. In addition to the exhibition, guided tours in Cantonese and Putonghua were held last month at designated times, allowing the public to gain deeper insights into the featured works and artistic techniques.

According to an information board message displayed at the exhibition, IC President Deland Leong Wau Man said that art “is a mirror of life, reflecting the pulse of the times and the microcosm of society”, noting that each work embodies the respective creator’s observation and interpretation of the contemporary world.

The message said that the bureau has long organised visual arts exhibitions to provide a platform for local artists and emerging talents, thereby promoting Macau’s cultural and artistic development, adding that the awarded and selected works demonstrate “solid traditional foundations and masterful techniques”, while also showing a balance between structured brushwork and expressive use of ink.

According to the message, the exhibition also highlighted the presence of young artists, who “honour tradition while boldly innovating”, injecting new vitality into Macau’s Chinese painting and calligraphy scene and contributing to the promotion of excellent traditional Chinese culture.

The “Annual Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts 2025 – Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Category” is on at the Tap Seac Gallery until this Thursday. With free admission, the exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., including public holidays.
