The public University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) recently held a series of health science talks that drew over 800 secondary school students who listened to a variety of topics.

Held in conjunction with secondary schools, the talks were held during the first half of the 2025/2026 academic year, according to a statement from the university yesterday.

The statement said that the talks tackled a variety of topics, aiming to “enhance young people’s scientific literacy and spark their interest in health sciences”.

Among the talks were “Do Your Genes Determine Everything about You?” by FHS Associate Professor Wong Koon Ho and “Understanding Epidemiology through the COVID-19 Pandemic” by UM Macao Fellow Che Weng Ian. The talks were part of Yuet Wah College’s “Science Month activities” and featured over 700 Form 3 to Form 5 students, the statement said.

There were also over 100 Form 4 and Form 5 students from Macau Baptist College. Other talks included “Application of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Future Prospects” by FHS Associate Professor Poon Chuen Wai, as well as “Research Techniques and Methods for the Modernisation of Traditional Chinese Medicine” by FHS Professor Leung Lai Han.

The talks, the statement said, saw students engaging in discussions and Q&A sessions, noting that in all, the activities were geared towards helping “foster scientific thinking and encourage academic exploration among young people in Macau”.
