The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) announced in a statement yesterday that the Maritime Museum will launch an on-site guided tour service tomorrow.

The statement said that in order to enrich the visiting experience, the Maritime Museum will offer complimentary on-site public guided tours at weekends, and no advance reservation is required.

One tour will be held every Saturday at 2:30 p.m., while two tours will be offered every Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively, the statement said.

According to the statement, the tours will be conducted in Cantonese only, each session lasting around 45 minutes, adding that anyone interested should gather at the designated meeting point inside the museum at the scheduled times.

Led by museum guides, the statement said, participants will learn about the history of Macau’s maritime development and the stories behind the exhibits through the museum’s collection of artefacts, historical photographs, and ship models.

According to the statement, in 2025, the Maritime Museum provided 94 guided tours for schools and community groups by appointment.

The statement said that the tours aim to further promote maritime culture among residents and tourists.

According to the statement, the museum’s themed temporary exhibition has attracted over 63,000 visitors since its opening on October 11 last year. The exhibition aims to showcase the centuries-long history of lighthouses and the evolution of maritime administration in Macau’s waters through a diverse range of exhibits and historical materials, according to the statement, adding that the exhibition will run until June 8, 2026.

China’s oldest lighthouse is the Maota Lighthouse (泖塔) in Shanghai, originally constructed during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), over 1,100 years ago.

Macau’s Guia Lighthouse (东望洋灯塔) began operating in 1865. It is southern China’s oldest Western-style lighthouse.
