The 45th Macao Green Week officially began on Saturday with an opening ceremony in Seac Pai Van Park in Coloane, bringing together government officials, organisations and members of the public to promote environmental protection and ecological awareness, according to a statement by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) that day.

The ceremony, held at 3 p.m., was officiated by several guests including Wong Sio Chak, secretary for Administration and Justice; Du Weimin, director of the Department of Office Work of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Cheng Lei, deputy commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao SAR; Shao Chungui, chief of staff of the People’s Liberation Army Macao Garrison (PLA); and Chao Wai Ieng, chairman of the Macau Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), the statement said.

In his speech, Chao highlighted Green Week as an important annual event dedicated to ecological conservation in Macau, the statement said, adding that he thanked various sectors of civil society for supporting the city’s greening efforts and noted that the bureau has continued to expand and improve urban green spaces, promote nature-themed facilities and strengthen ecological education, including the protection of ancient and valuable trees.

Following the ceremony, guests visited environmental protection booths and workshops set up by organisations from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, Suzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, the statement said, adding that they also toured newly built facilities in the park, including its Pavilion of Amphibians and Reptiles, Aviary and Butterfly-Friendly Garden.

According to the statement, more than 100 soldiers of the local PLA garrison and residents also joined tree maintenance activities in nearby hilly woodland, contributing to local ecological conservation.

This year’s Green Week runs from last Saturday to this coming Sunday, featuring over 40 nature-themed activities, including eco-tours, birdwatching, tree conservation programmes and family-friendly events aimed at raising public awareness about protecting the natural environment.
