The 15th Macau Literary Festival –The Script Road marked its final day yesterday, ending the eleven-day run of an extensive programme.
Concluding the events yesterday was the poetry session “Final Verses” at Casa Garden, bringing together local poets and guests for the festival’s closing act. Award-winning Colombian-American poet Carlos Andrés Gómez, who is also an actor and writer, kicked off the session, which was a multi-lingual one that broke boundaries between languages through the spoken word.
The rest of the afternoon prior to the poetry session saw book talks and launches at the same venue, where a dedicated space was also the site of a two-day Women’s Month Pop-up Exhibition that launched on Saturday, featuring the works by Ana Jacinto Nunes, a Portuguese artist residing in Macau who has had works exhibited worldwide in the past 30 years.
Meanwhile, outside of Casa Garden, the second of the two-day performance of the Portuguese version of Suzie Miller’s courtroom drama “Prima Facie” was also presented at the Macau Cultural Centre’s small auditorium over the weekend. It stars Portuguese actress Margarida Vila-Nova and was directed by film director Tiago Guedes, also from Portugal.
The 15th edition of the festival, which launched in 2012, ran from March 5 to March 15 and featured a host of activities and highlights from concerts and exhibitions to book launches and presentations, along with film screenings. Among the invited guests were many from the Chinese and Portuguese-speaking world, alongside Macau writers. Guests from elsewhere included English writer and journalist Lawrence Osborne, who wrote the novel “The Ballad of a Small Player”, and Mike Goodridge, a producer involved in the book’s 2025 film adaptation; China historian and writer Paul French; and Indian author Amitav Ghosh, who, according to Wikipedia, received the 54th Jnanpith award in 2018, India’s highest literary honour.
The programme also brought together local and visiting poets, filmmakers, musicians, actors and visual artists. Events were mainly held at Casa Garden, the local headquarters of the Macau delegation of the Lisbon-based Orient Foundation (FO).
