The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a drunk man for grabbing the steering wheel of a moving TCM route 27 bus last week, PSP spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Kong identified the suspect as a local resident in his fifties surnamed Iong.
In the early hours of Saturday, Kong said that the Public Security Police received a report of a disturbance at the junction of Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde (青洲河邊馬路) and Avenida do Parque Industrial (工業園大馬路). When arriving at the scene, PSP officers questioned the bus driver and Iong, Kong said.
The bus driver told police that while driving the bus, Iong, who appeared to be heavily intoxicated, suddenly signalled that he needed to get off immediately and reached for the steering wheel three times, causing the bus to swerve, Kong said, adding that the driver promptly pulled the bus over to the side of the road and called the police for assistance.
According to Kong, Iong told police that during a meal the previous evening, he had consumed a large amount of alcohol, and while on the bus heading home, he mistakenly believed he had missed his stop and told the driver to let him off. After being refused, an argument ensued, and he admitted to grabbing the steering wheel, Kong said.
Kong noted that Iong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning. She pointed out that Iong faces a charge in line with Article 278 of the Macau Penal Code for “endangering road transport safety.” According to the article, he could face a prison term ranging from two to eight years.
