Three art collectors of different backgrounds are showcasing their prized items in the “Show-Off 4.0” exhibition at the Taipa Village Art Space, with the exhibition on until May 15.

Located at 29-31 Rua dos Mercadores in Taipa Village, the free-admission exhibition is the fourth instalment in the series. This time, it features a collection of artworks on display, among which are paintings and Chinese shop plaques. The items amassed over the years all belong to collectors José Isaac Duarte, Luís Pessanha, Chao Iok Leng.

In this exhibition, university economics lecturer Duarte presents pieces by Mozambican painter and poet Malangatana Valente Ngwenya (1936-2011), who, according to a statement provided at the gallery, is “widely regarded as one of Mozambique’s most important modern artists and a major figure in 20th century African art”, with work represented in major international collections, including at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Luís Pessanha is a legal professional and researcher serving as a legal advisor to Macau’s Legislative Assembly and a part-time lecturer in the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Law, the statement said. He is the son of Portuguese painter Ana Pessanha.

His collection mainly features works by local artists and photographers.  The statement added that over the past decade, Pessanha and his partner have been engaged in acquiring artworks both locally and internationally.

Lastly, artist and Macau Yi Un Calligraphy and Painting Association Vice President Chao is showcasing two name plaques from her former shops, alongside with personal objects. Chao, who holds other titles including adviser to different local art associations, founded Macau’s Livraria Ngai Chi Hin (Ngai Chi Hin Bookstore) in the 1980s, as well as the specialty fan shop Nam Fan Lou in the early 2000s.

Taipa Village Cultural Association President João Ó was quoted by the statement as saying: “This rare and special exhibition aims to explore the nature of collecting and prompt visually stimulating conversations around the cultural possessions of individuals with very specific, highly personal interests.”

Gallerygoers may visit daily from 12 noon to 8 p.m., with more details available by visiting https://www.taipavillagemacau.com/
