Commemoration for the Holocaust Remembrance Day held in Hong Kong
April 14, 2026
On Monday (April 13, 2026), the Consulate General of Israel in Hong Kong and Macau and the Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre hosted a solemn ceremony to mark the Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah). The event honored the memory of six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust and the enduring spirit of survivors who have shared their stories to ensure that their light never fades.
This year’s remembrance theme focuses on the Jewish family in the Holocaust. Amidst relentless persecution and systematic dehumanization, the family remained a vital source of strength, hope, and identity. We pay tribute to the parents who made unimaginable sacrifices to protect their children, siblings who supported each other in the darkest of times, and the countless families whose lineages were tragically extinguished. By remembering their names and stories, we keep their legacy alive and honor their enduring bonds.
Mr. Amir Lati, Consul General of Israel in Hong Kong and Macau, said in his speech that the family and its values have been central to Jewish tradition. The Nazis sought not only to annihilate individuals but to obliterate entire families, erase cultural heritage, and destroy a culture thousands of years old. Yet, even amidst unimaginable suffering, the resilience of the human spirit shone through in ghettos and camps – in the sacrifices of parents, the support among siblings, and the formation of “found families” among strangers.
The ceremony served as a reminder of the importance of remembrance, tolerance, and the ongoing fight against hatred and antisemitism. We stand united in honoring those who endured and in reaffirming our commitment to the vow Never Again.
