Various local authorities hosted a press conference at the Barrier Gate border checkpoint arrivals hall yesterday morning about their preparations for the upcoming Labour Day holiday.
Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong forecast between 3.6 and 3.7 million border crossers passing through Macau’s border checkpoints, equating to 720,000 to 740,000 border crossers per day. The Chinese mainland’s Labour Day holiday runs from May 1-5.
In Macau, only May Day is a public holiday, but many locals will be able to enjoy a long weekend between Friday and Sunday.
The press conference was also attended by representatives from the Macau Customs Service, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the Transport Bureau (DSAT), and the Macau Consumer Council (CCM).
According to a statement released during the briefing, the Public Security Police will “dynamically adjust” resources at Macau’s nine border checkpoints, open additional inspection lanes based on passenger flow, and implement crowd-diversion measures. Patrols will also be increased in popular tourist areas. The Macau Customs Service has prepared contingency plans to coordinate the opening of extra vehicle lanes during peak traffic and will collaborate with authorities in the Chinese mainland to combat smuggling.
The Macau Consumer Council has launched a “Consumption Tips for Macau Travel” guide and will remain open from May 1-3. The council added that tourists can seek assistance via its “Consumer Online” platform and the CCM hotline 8988 9315.
Meanwhile, MGTO is encouraging visitors to use its “Smart Application for Visitor Flows” to check foot traffic at tourist attractions and has advised the tourism industry to refer to data on the “Macao Tourism Data Plus” platform.
The statement noted that the Transport Bureau has coordinated bus and light rail (LRT) services, improved transport facilities at border checkpoints, and will release real-time transport information through mobile applications. The public is encouraged to use public transport and stagger their travel times.
