A local woman in her seventies was arrested last week for taking a kick scooter that had been left in a Fai Chi Kei park in March, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson revealed during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect, an unemployed woman surnamed Tam, was apprehended following an investigation into the missing property.

The incident occurred on 14 March, when a resident took their grandchild and two kick scooters to the children’s playground. Upon leaving, the resident accidentally left both scooters near the slide. By the time they realised and returned to the playground, both scooters had vanished, prompting a report to the police. The owner valued the scooters at 180 patacas each.

After reviewing the citywide CCTV network, PSP officers identified Tam as the person who took one of the scooters.

The investigation also clarified the fate of the second scooter. Police confirmed it had been mistaken for abandoned waste and removed by a worker from the city’s cleaning and waste collection concessionaire. After the police spoke to the cleaning company, the cleaning company contacted the owner to explain the situation. The owner reportedly accepted the explanation and declined to hold the company liable.

On Friday, the Public Security Police (PSP) summoned Tam for questioning. She admitted to taking the kick scooter home with the intention of keeping it.

Tam has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) and faces a charge of theft by finding.

This undated handout photo released by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday shows two police officers escorting the elderly theft-by-finding suspect to a police station near Toi San district in the north of the peninsula.
