Macau Computer Society (MCS) Director General Michael Chan Weng Kin said yesterday he was “very optimistic” about the development of the local information technology (IT) sector as the government plans to develop Macau into a smart city.

Chan made the remarks yesterday during a press conference about his group’s annual IT competition “Macau IT Innovation Awards”. The press conference was held on the premises of the Macau Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) in Macau Square.

Chan said while the development of the local IT sector has been hindered by the shortage of IT professionals, the government’s plan to develop Macau into a smart city stated in its Five-Year Development Plan, released last year, would provide “many” opportunities for the sector’s development and IT professionals.
