The local government is calling on residents, businesses and public institutions to take part in two energy-saving initiatives this month as part of activities marking tomorrow’s World Environment Day* (WED), including a citywide lights-off campaign and a summer energy conservation programme, according to a statement issued by the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) yesterday.
The activities are part of the Macau programme for the “National Event on the Environment Day 2026” and “Beautiful China Promotion Week”, the statement said.
The “Switch Off for One Hour” initiative will take place tomorrow from 8:30 p.m. through 9:30 p.m., the statement noted, adding that during the event, four cross-sea bridges, six integrated resorts, selected government buildings and landmark structures, as well as participating businesses, associations, banks, hotels and schools, will turn off non-essential lighting and electrical equipment.
According to the statement, residents are also encouraged to switch off unnecessary lights and appliances at home during the hour-long initiative to help reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental protection.
Meanwhile, the “Casual Summer, Save Energy Together” initiative, which started on Monday and ends on August 31, the statement noted, adding that public servants are encouraged to wear light and comfortable clothing instead of formal suits and to set air-conditioning temperatures at no lower than 25 degrees Celsius, or increase their usual temperature settings by one degree.
The government is also encouraging private companies, associations and residents to adopt similar measures to reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfortable working and living environments, the bureau underlined, noting that the initiatives demonstrate how small lifestyle changes can collectively contribute to greener living and support the nation’s “dual carbon” goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
As part of the wider programme, the Macau launch ceremony for the 2026 National World Environment Day event and the “Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction for All” initiative will be held on Saturday afternoon, the statement said.
According to the statement, the ceremony will include the launch of several environmental programmes, including the “Macau Power Saving – 5% Energy Saving Action”, and recognise individuals who have contributed to environmental protection efforts. Moreover, a beach cleanup activity titled “Easy Beach Cleanup” will also be held on Saturday morning, bringing volunteers together to remove litter from local beaches, the statement noted.
