As Macau grapples with sweltering heat, the local observatory warned on its website yesterday that temperatures will continue to remain high today and tomorrow.
The city has been seeing high temperatures for the past few days, with the Yellow Hot Weather warning, the lower of Macau’s two-level weather warnings that indicates it is “very hot” in Macau, put up accordingly.
According to the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) website yesterday, temperatures will soar to 33 degrees or higher, noting that it will be “very hot” between today and tomorrow. Members of the public were reminded to stay hydrated and beware of heatstroke.
In a separate SMG statement, it was noted that temperatures may rise in the next two to three days due to a blanket of upper-air anticyclone and weak winds, adding that maximum temperatures could generally reach 34 degrees or above across various districts, or potentially two to three degrees higher in urban areas. Brief, heavy thunderstorms from the afternoon to evening may also be triggered by the rising mercury, the statement said.
Meanwhile, next week, a burst of the southwest monsoon will bring a vast amount of warm, humid moisture to the South China coast and ushering in “the peak rainfall period of the ‘pre-flood season’”. A low-pressure trough will begin to affect the South China coast early next week. Combined, the statement said that showers and thunderstorms might increase starting Sunday and last for several days.
At the same time, the statement said, a low-pressure area located in the central part of the South China Sea might develop into a tropical cyclone, generally heading toward the vicinity of China’s Taiwan region, so that the risk of directly affecting Macau “remains low”. The bureau will closely monitor the situation, the statement added.
More information can be found on the SMG website.
