Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) Director Ip Kuong Lam told reporters during a launch ceremony on Saturday that the construction and equipment installation of Macau’s first supercharging station for electric vehicles (EVs), located on Rua da Patinagem (溜冰路) in Cotai, have been completed and the gradual trial operation will follow after commissioning.
Ip made the remarks during the “Main National Event for World Environment Day on June 5, 2026 (Macau)” rollout ceremony and the “All-People Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction” action kickoff ceremony at the Complex of Commerce and Trade Cooperation Platform for China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (aka Forum Macao Complex) in Nam Van.
Meanwhile, the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) government plans to increase the number of fast chargers by about 20 percent this year, and charging points for electric scooters will be added in more than 50 public carparks this year, raising the total from over 800 to about 1,400 – an increase of about 45 percent, Ip said.
Ip added that his bureau will cooperate with power utility CEM to optimise the charging stations app, aiming to provide real-time charging station availability and state of charge of electric vehicles (EVs).
Since the MSAR government launched its long-term carbon reduction strategy and electric vehicle promotion plan in 2023, after two and a half years of implementation, local carbon emissions have been effectively brought under control, Ip said, adding that land transportation has taken the lead in achieving carbon peaking, while various initiatives such as low-carbon electricity, clean energy substitution, and environmental protection publicity have been steadily implemented.
Ip noted in a speech that electricity supply and land transportation are Macau’s two main sources of carbon emissions. In line with its policy agenda, the MSAR government is working to increase the share of clean electricity in imported power, he said, adding that under this year’s policy plan, the proportion of clean energy in purchased electricity will be raised to 50 percent, with a long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality in imported electricity by 2050.
June 5 Main National Event for World Environment Day
Ip addressed the kickoff ceremony on Saturday saying that in response to World Environment Day on June 5, under the guidance of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have jointly organised the “June 5 Main National Event for World Environment Day” and the “Beautiful China Promotion Week” for the first time this year.
For this year’s event, themed “Comprehensive Green Transition, Building a Beautiful China Together”; a raft of activities are being held, including environmental protection colouring and creative painting competition, public guided tours of eco-facilities, and “lights off for one hour” which was held on Friday.
