The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) plans to launch a smart technology assistive device* rental service next month, which will be based at a women’s resource centre providing short-term trials, IAS Department Chief U Ka Wai told reporters on the sidelines of an award ceremony yesterday.
U did not elaborate on the location of the women’s resource centre.
U made the remarks during yesterday’s “Smart Mobility Aid Design Competition” award ceremony at the Macau Science Centre (MSC) in Zape.
U noted that users who are satisfied with and interested in the devices can purchase them directly, while eligible residents can apply for subsidies to acquire assistive equipment, adding that the bureau will continue to integrate smart technology into both personal and institutional settings.
The local women’ resource centre will provide home caregivers with a one-stop service including the selection, application, and usage guidance of assistive gear, as well as needs assessment, to alleviate their stress, U said, adding that the Social Welfare Bureau will also partner with the Macau Science Centre (MSC) and schools to launch public awareness campaigns, guiding young people to pay attention to the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities, and encouraging them to participate in designing smart products tailored to these groups, U added.
10-Year Rehabilitation Action Plan
U also revealed that the bureau has completed preparatory work for its 10-Year Action Plan for Rehabilitation Services (2026–2035), with only administrative procedures remaining before its official announcement. He added that several initiatives are already being advanced in parallel, noting that the bureau has formulated over 80 specific action items, many of which are underway and progressing steadily.
In addition, the bureau plans to introduce funding schemes to support rehabilitation institutions, helping them adopt smart technologies to enhance training services, operational management, and overall efficiency, U said.
Smart Mobility Aid Design Competition
Meanwhile, IAS Director Wilson Hon Wa noted in speech that the “Smart Mobility Aid Design Competition” aimed to provide a practical platform for young people, encouraging them to pay attention to the needs of the elderly and disabled communities, and to integrate innovative thinking and technology into their entries to effectively meet the practical needs of these groups.
All entries will be displayed at the Macau Science Centre (MSC) from July 1 to October 11 and at the age-friendly home modification display area in Mong Tak Building (望德樓) from October 23 to January 20 next year.
