Local man, 87, dies of influenza A in Macau

An 87-year-old local man inflicted with chronic diseases died of influenza A on Sunday, the Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement last night.

According to the statement, the patient came down with a fever and cough on Monday last week, after which he sought treatment at the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre the next day as his symptoms persisted.

Afterwards, he was diagnosed with influenza A complicated with pneumonia and was hospitalised. He died on Sunday after his condition worsened.


Man, 73, critical with influenza B

Meanwhile, the statement also announced that a 73-year-old local man inflicted with chronic diseases was in a critical condition last night after being infected with influenza B.

The man came down with a fever and cough on June 9 and then sought treatment at the public Macao Union Hospital in Cotai. 

As his symptoms persisted, he sought treatment at the hospital again on June 11 where he was diagnosed with influenza B complicated with pneumonia and was hospitalised.

As his symptoms subsequently worsened, he was put on a ventilator and was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU).

He was in a critical condition at the time of last night’s statement.

According to the statement, neither of the two men travelled outside Macau during the incubation period. Neither of them had received a seasonal influenza jab. None of their respective family members had come down with similar symptoms at the time of last night’s statement.


Woman, 64, critical with COVID-19

Meanwhile, a separate SSM statement last night announced that a 64-year-old local woman inflicted with chronic diseases was in a critical condition last night after being infected with COVID-19.

The woman came down with a fever and cough on Monday last week and then sought treatment at the private Kiang Wu Hospital where she tested positive for COVID-19.

As her symptoms persisted, she sought treatment at the hospital again on Sunday where she was diagnosed with pneumonia. Later that day, she was transferred to the ICU of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre where she was put on a ventilator.

She was in a critical condition at the time of last night’s statement.

The woman did not travel outside Macau during the incubation period.

The statement said that the woman had never received a COVID-19 jab. None of her family members had come down with similar symptoms at the time of last night’s statement.
