The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said in a statement on Monday that it is partnering with major electronic payment platforms in key source markets South Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong, in order to offer travel spending incentives aimed at attracting more visitors and encouraging consumption in Macau.

According to the statement, the initiative combines payment promotions with seasonal travel campaigns, major events and holiday periods in the second half of the year to increase visitors’ willingness to travel and spend in the city.

The statement added that the programme targets markets with strong growth potential by collaborating with widely used payment platforms, namely Naver Pay in South Korea, TrueMoney in Thailand, and AlipayHK in Hong Kong.

The partnerships are intended to make spending in Macau more convenient for visitors using familiar payment tools while strengthening the city’s image as a tourist destination with diverse electronic payment options, the statement noted, underlining that South Korea remains Macau’s largest international visitor market.

From last month to December, MGTO is working with Naver Pay on spending promotions supported by online advertising campaigns, platform marketing and promotional content featuring South Korean entertainer Park Jinyoung, aiming to showcase Macau’s lifestyle experiences and tourism offerings, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Thailand was ranked as Macau’s third-largest international source market from January to April, with visitor arrivals increasing by nearly 60 percent year-on-year, the statement said, pointing out that MGTO and TrueMoney are jointly offering tourism spending incentives from last month through December, including the return of the “Macao Wonder” online travel fair this month and November, featuring discounted Macau travel packages, flights and accommodation.

MGTO is also planning additional promotions with a Thai telecommunications company and online travel agencies, including a vlog campaign featuring Thai actor Chayapak Tunprayoon highlighting Macau’s food and other attractions, the statement added.

Moreover, for the Hong Kong market, MGTO recently staged the “Macau Summer Market” promotional event and will launch further themed campaigns with local travel information websites and AlipayHK next month through October, the statement pointed out.

MGTO said it will continue working with mainstream payment platforms in different source markets while expanding targeted promotional campaigns to diversify visitor arrivals, enrich travel experiences and stimulate tourism spending in Macau, the statement said.

As of June, businesses in Macau accept a wide range of local, Chinese mainland and foreign electronic payment services, providing greater convenience for travellers from different countries and regions, the statement noted.
