Gender inequality in films, particularly in Hollywood, has in recent years been much talked about as the issue is forcing women in the industry to speak out and stand up for themselves.

Just last week in a forum at Cannes Film Festival, Mexican star Selma Hayak complained that Hollywood treats actresses like ‘performing monkeys’ and wants to get rid of them once they are found to be smart.

The French festival this year saw just three women filmmakers in the 19 films that ran in competition for the Palm d’Or. “The Square” by Swedish director Ruben Ostlund won top prize and Sofia Coppola, from the US, won best director with “The Beguiled”.
