The Municipal Affairs Bureau has detected excessive levels of lead in a sample of bulk-packed whole-egg noodles from “San Tong Heng Min KaS” (新同興麵家) on Travessa de Chan Loc (陳樂巷) during a routine food inspection, according to a IAM statement.

The statement pointed out that the problematic sample was found to contain 0.432 milligrams of lead per kilogram, exceeding the limit stipulated in local food administrative regulation.

Lead is a heavy metal contaminant that can damage the human nervous system when ingested in excessive amounts, the statement said, adding that at the detected level of lead, normal consumption of the product is unlikely to pose adverse health effects to the public; however, long-term and excessive intake may carry certain health risks.

The statement noted that the bureau immediately intervened, ordering the manufacturer to stop selling the affected product, cease its production and supply, and rectify its manufacturing and preparation processes until they meet safety and hygiene requirements and pass re-inspection and re-testing, adding that the bureau will continue to follow up on the matter.

The bureau reminded the food trade industry to strictly comply with food safety and hygiene requirements and to have a clear understanding of proper processing and preparation methods. Operators are also obliged to retain purchase invoices and sales records to facilitate traceability by the authorities when necessary.

At the same time, the bureau advised consumers to maintain a balanced diet to avoid excessive intake of any substance through overconsumption of a single food item.
