The “AI-Era Optical Communication and Optical Interconnect Industry Investment Summit” concluded at Grand Hyatt Macau yesterday, with the aim of reinforcing technology and financial-industry exchanges and cooperation across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, while driving innovation in the local modern financial sector and supporting the city’s appropriate economic diversification, according to a statement by the organiser Haitong International Securities Group Limited.
The one-day summit covered policy frameworks, macroeconomic trends, cutting-edge technologies, and industrial investment, attracting over 100 participants from financial institutions, leading technology enterprises, and industry experts.
Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) President Che Weng Keong noted in a speech during yesterday’s opening ceremony of the summit that optical communication and optical interconnect technologies* hold immense market potential in the AI era and new avenues for collaborative industrial development across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Che said that leveraging the “One Country, Two Systems” framework that enables internal connectivity and external outreach, while closely aligning with the new “Macau+ Hengqin” positioning, will facilitate the settlement of more high-quality high-tech projects in Macau, promote effective alignment between technological innovation and capital, and support enterprises in both “going global” and “bringing in”.
Meanwhile, the local government has announced plans to establish a government-guided fund this year, with an expected allocation of 20 billion patacas, Che said, adding that the fund aims to leverage public capital to attract and channel private investment into priority industries and projects, support the commercialisation of scientific research, nurture early-stage tech startups, and drive industrial upgrading and transformation.
Che pointed out that after the official inauguration of the Macao International Science and Technology Industry Centre last month, it will serve as an industrial carrier and international service platform for tech enterprises, innovation projects, and investment institutions, aiming to build a pipeline of quality enterprises for the city’s planned Macao Science and Technology Research and Development Industrial Park, facilitating the settlement and growth of high-quality projects in key sectors such as biomedicine, digital technology, integrated circuits, and aerospace technology.
* Optical interconnect technology refers to the use of light (optical signals) instead of electricity to transmit data between different components within a computing or communication system. Instead of traditional copper wires and electronic circuitry, these systems utilise light sources (like lasers or LEDs), optical waveguides (like fiber optics or silicon channels), and photodetectors to route data. – Gemini
