A Fire Services Bureau (CB) spokesman confirmed to the Post by phone last night that a concrete mixer truck, suspected to have been left without its handbrake engaged, had crashed into a stone wall.
The spokesman said that at around 6:40 p.m. yesterday, the bureau received a report about a traffic accident at a roundabout at the junction of Avenida Wai Long (偉龍馬路) and Avenida do Aeroporto (機場大馬路), involving a private car and a truck.
Upon arrival, the firefighters confirmed that a concrete mixer truck had crashed into a wall at a construction site near the airport, the spokesman said, adding that rubble from the wall had struck two private cars on the road.
The first car had a driver and two passengers, while there was only a driver in the second car. All four were local residents, aged around 50 to 60. The two passengers in the first car sustained abrasions to their hands.
The passengers suffered abrasions and shock, according to the spokesman. The duo were in a stable condition when they were taken by ambulance to the Kiang Wu Hospital Taipa Medical Centre.
The spokesman said firefighters suspected the driverless concrete mixer truck had rolled forwards for about 100 metres without its handbrake engaged before crashing into the stone wall, sending debris flying into the two vehicles on the road.
After the truck hit the stone wall, it became wedged against it. As a precaution, the firefighters secured the vehicle and prepared fire hoses, the spokesman said, adding that the truck’s front end was severely damaged and steel reinforcement bars were left exposed in the broken wall.
The incident has been reported to the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) and the Public Works Bureau (DSOP).
A Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman confirmed to the Post by the phone last night that the truck driver told the police that he had parked the truck on the ramp of the construction site and engaged the handbrake so the incident may have occurred due to brake failure.
