Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Wai Lok announced on Saturday that PJ officers arrested a man from Malaysia for smuggling 3.4 kilos of cannabis worth 3.41 million patacas at the local airport on Saturday.
The Judiciary Police hosted a special press conference at the airport on Saturday.
Ho identified the suspect as a 26-year-old male named Akhmal who claimed to be jobless.
According to Ho, the Judiciary Police (PJ) identified Akhmal on a flight from Southeast Asia following a tip-off. Working alongside the Macao Customs Service, PJ officers deployed to the airport to await his arrival.
On Saturday afternoon, Ho said, when Akhmal disembarked and went to collect his luggage from the conveyer belt, officers took action, adding that upon inspection, six bags of cannabis, weighing a total of 3.4 kilos and with an estimated street value of around 3.41 million patacas, were found in his suitcase.
Ho also said that Akhmal was acting on the instructions of an overseas drug trafficking syndicate, adding that he had received the drugs from abroad, smuggled them into Macau and was then to forward them to neighbouring regions as directed. Akhmal confessed that he would have been paid 7,000 ringgit for the job, equivalent to around 14,000 patacas, according to Ho.
Akhmal was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Saturday, facing a drug trafficking charge.
Ho also said that PJ officers will continue to investigate leads in the case and pursue any other suspects who may be involved.
