Residents and visitors said yesterday that the three-day “Macao District Lifestyle Festival 2026: World Cup Series” has brought energy and community interaction to the Inner Harbour’s Barra district, with activities, markets and football-themed experiences attracting people of different ages during its run.

“Barra” means “harbour entrance” in Portuguese.

Speaking to the Post yesterday, four visitors who attended the event gave their views on the festival, which was held at Navy Yard No. 1 & 2 and its outdoor area as part of a wider World Cup-themed community event. Both the World Cup and the Barra festival ended yesterday.

Yue, a 23-year-old university student, said that the event created a “lively atmosphere” in the neighbourhood, especially with its combination of football activities and local market stalls. “It is nice to see a place where people can gather, not only for football fans but also for families and visitors who just want to enjoy the atmosphere”, she said, adding that the market gave local vendors an opportunity to showcase their products while encouraging more people to visit the Barra area.

For 19-year-old Zhang, a first-year university student, said she she enjoyed the variety of activities available, including the football challenges and shopping areas. “The event makes the neighbourhood feel more active. It gives young people and families something different to do during the weekend”, Zhang said, adding that the festival also helped introduce visitors to the Barra district beyond its traditional attractions.

Fred, 18, a high-school student who attended the event with his family, said that it provided a good opportunity for families to spend time together. “It is a meaningful community event because children can play, while adults can explore the market and enjoy the performances”, Fred said, noting that events like this could help strengthen connections between residents and create more community-focused activities.

However, not all residents shared the same view. Chang, 23, said that while he appreciated the effort to bring more activities to the area, he observed that the crowds and performances occasionally caused noise concerns for those living nearby. “The atmosphere is good, but I can understand why some neighbours might feel it is a quite noisy”, Chang underlined.

Organisers reflect on community impact, scale

Anigo, 36, one of the event organisers, said that the festival received a positive response from both younger visitors and older residents, adding that he had rarely seen a World Cup-themed event of this scale in Macau before. “As a local person, I don’t think I have seen something like this before. Because it is an official adidas FIFA event, I am very excited about it, and people are really enjoying it”, Anigo said, adding that the event was designed to appeal to different age groups, with weekend performances and activities attracting not only children and football fans but also elderly visitors.

Anigo noted that the festival also aimed to benefit nearby businesses through promotional initiatives. Under one arrangement, customers who spent more than 500 patacas at participating shops in the area could enter a lucky draw for opportunities to watch the World Cup final (Spain vs. Argentina) at the venue starting at 3:00 o’clock (local time) early this morning. He underlined that more than 300 football fans signed up to watch the final, reflecting the intense interest generated by the event.

According to Anigo, the local event was the first adidas FIFA World Cup-themed event of its kind in the city. He said that the project was organised in collaboration with adidas, local authorities and community partners, with preparations completed in around one and a half months. “I think it has definitely helped the neighbourhood. We have policies to support local businesses, and we hope this event can bring more people to the area”, Anigo said.

While residents generally welcomed the event’s contribution to neighbourhood vibrancy, some also highlighted the importance of balancing community activities with nearby residents’ concerns.
