Macau recorded a total of 6,941 traffic accidents in the first half of this year, a year-on-year drop of 5.3 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the latest traffic statistics released by the Public Security Police (PSP) on their website yesterday.
In the first six months of this year, two people died in traffic accidents, a driver and a pedestrian.
In the first six months of last year, no one died in traffic accidents, while in the second half of last year, seven died in traffic accidents.
In the first half of this year, nine people were hospitalised after being injured in traffic accidents, a year-on-year decrease of 65.4 percent from 26 people in the same period last year.
In the first six months of this year, 2,613 people received outpatient hospital treatment for traffic accident injuries, up 0.7 percent from 2,594 people in the same period last year.
Jumping red lights up 74 pct, failing to give way on zebra crossings up 97 pct
According to the traffic statistics released yesterday, the police fined 4,401 drivers and motorcyclists for jumping red lights in the first half of this year, up 74.0 percent from 2,530 in the same period last year.
In the first six months of this year, the police fined 646 drivers and motorcyclists for failing to give way to pedestrians on zebra crossings, up 97.0 percent from 328 in the same period last year.
The police fined 2,759 pedestrians for jaywalking in the first half of this year, down 41.0 percent from 4,680 in the same period last year.
In the first six months of this year, the police fined 322,419 drivers and motorcyclists for illegal parking (up 0.1 percent year-on-year), comprising 63,952 for failing to pay for street parking meters (up 96.8 percent year-on-year) and 258,467 for all other types of illegal parking (down 10.7 percent year-on-year).
Moreover, the police recorded 906 violations by cabbies in the first half of this year, down 21.5 percent from 1,154 in the same period last year.
Over half of the 906 violations, numbering 462, were cases of jumping the queue to pick up passengers at taxi ranks.
The 906 violations also included 84 cases of refusing to pick up passengers, 53 cases of long-hauling, and 16 cases of overcharging passengers.
Long-hauling refers to the act of a cabbie taking passengers on a long detour to the destination without consent in order to ramp up the fare.
