The private Catholic University of Saint Joseph is hosting yet another edition of its nature themed competitions, this time exploring urban biodiversity.
According to its website, the competition, “Our Living Cities: Discovering Urban Biodiversity”, highlights urban biodiversity, noting that nature is not separate from urban life – wildlife and micro-ecosystems thrive right alongside us in the city every day.
The statement meanwhile defined the setting, urban space, as “human-built and human-dominated environments”, encouraging participants to “reveal the hidden biodiversity that surrounds us and celebrate the nature that makes our urban environments vibrant and resilient”.
Among the suggested subthemes for the contest are “The lives of urban wildlife in and around our cities”; “The role of common species in urban ecosystems”; and “Urban microhabitats (home gardens, balconies, gardens, drains, walls, trees, rooftops)”, as noted in the statement.
The contest is open to submissions until October 15 and features two categories. The first is for students in primary and secondary school, calling on the submission of one artwork created through mediums such as drawing and painting.
The second is an open category for photography, for which all photos must have been taken within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Up to two submissions can be made.
The top prize per category is 1,000 patacas, while 800 patacas and 500 patacas are up for grabs for second and third place respectively. There will also be five honourable mentions and two special awards.
Moreover, selected works will also be exhibited at The Venetian Macao in Cotai.
