Macau recorded its wettest July since weather records began in 1952, with monthly rainfall reaching 962 millimetres. Several other climate indicators also matched or set historical records, according to a statement released yesterday by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG).
The bureau said that last month was affected by troughs of low pressure, active southwesterly airflows, and tropical cyclones, resulting in significantly above-average rainfall and lower-than-normal temperatures.
Total rainfall for July reached 962.0 mm – 2.3 times the climatological average and the highest July total on record. The high number of rainy days also led to record lows for the average minimum temperature (25 °C), the month’s lowest single temperature (21.9 °C), and total sunshine duration for July (116.1 hours).
Meanwhile, the mean monthly temperature of 27.5 °C equalled the lowest July average previously recorded in 1955, 2001, and 2013. The average relative humidity for the month reached 89 percent, matching the record July highs registered in 1959 and 1997.
The observatory added that the combination of persistent rainfall, lower temperatures, and reduced sunshine made last month one of the most unusual Julys in Macau’s recorded weather history.
