Lawmaker-cum-unionist Ella Lei Cheng I yesterday urged the government to start construction of public housing projects planned for government-owned plots of land as soon as possible.

Lei made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a forum organised by the Choi In Tong Sam Association, which is the think tank of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (commonly known as Gung Luen), at the federation’s headquarters in Rua da Ribeira do Patane. The forum was about the government’s public housing policies.

The government has proposed building 12,600 public housing units in “the short or medium term”, including a controversial public housing project providing 8,000 units on the plot of the abandoned La Scala luxury housing development near the airport.
