The one-way flyover leading to Guia Hill Tunnel from Avenida de Horta e Costa will close to traffic from 10:00 a.m. this Saturday until 4:00 p.m. next Tuesday to allow for the repair of worn expansion joints* on the road surface, according to a joint statement by the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) and the Transport Bureau (DSAT) on Tuesday.
DSOP officials concluded during a recent routine inspection that the flyover’s expansion joints required repair, the statement said. New materials will be used to enhance the joints’ durability and ensure traffic safety.
The repair work will not affect the flyover leading from Guia Hill Tunnel to Avenida de Horta e Costa, which will remain open to traffic throughout the period, the statement said.
The statement noted that motorists can enter Guia Hill Tunnel via Avenida de Sidónio Pais during the closure.
*Expansion joints are structural gaps and flexible assemblies designed to safely absorb thermal expansion, ground settling, seismic movements, and vibrations in civil structures and piping systems. Without them, natural material movement creates severe internal stress, leading to concrete cracking, structural buckling, or pipe rupture. – Gemini
