An exhibition of artworks by the winners of the “10th Xu Beihong Cup International Arts Competition for Youth & Children (Macau Division)” is taking place at the Chun Cao Tong Exhibition Hall in Lou Lim Ioc Garden, featuring over 300 artworks.
The exhibition of the award-winning artwork ends next Thursday.
According to Gemini, Xu Beihong (1895–1953) was a master painter, art educator, and pioneer of modern Chinese art who synthesised traditional Chinese ink painting with Western realist techniques. He is widely recognised as the father of modern Chinese painting and celebrated for his dynamic ink paintings of galloping horses and his monumental historical works.
The exhibition showcases a diverse array of themes to pay tribute to Xu’s artistic spirit through traditional motifs such as galloping horses, ink wash landscapes, and Chinese calligraphy, with some works drawing inspiration from Macau’s street characteristics, natural ecology, family affection, and imaginative realms, according to a statement by the organisers.
Art Teacher Communication Association of Macau President Leong Hong Si addressed yesterday’s awards ceremony, saying that the biennial competition aims to further promote Xu Beihong’s artistic legacy, immerse the local younger generation in art to inspire perception, and leverage the local unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures to deepen artistic and cultural exchanges.
Curator Liang Jiajie noted that the exhibition is structured around the life education philosophy of “Joyfully Experiencing the Truth, Goodness, and Beauty of Life”, with the aim of connecting the legacy of Xu’s artistic spirit with children’s growth and development.
The Xu Beihong Cup, themed “Ten Thousand Horses Galloping” (萬馬奔騰) this time, is being held in Macau for the first time. This year’s competition received over 710 entries from different local schools, as well as mainland Chinese schools and art institutions in places such as Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, and the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone, highlighting its cross-regional artistic exchange, according to a statement from the organisers.
