The bond between a parent and child is among the central themes of Guangdong-born artist Lego Liang’s (梁賀) exhibition “ANGEL’s Promise” (天使之約 ANGEL), which is being held as one of the main exhibitions of 10 Fantasia’s ongoing Picture Book Festival.
Displayed across the second floor of the gallery, the exhibition features bald, round-headed figures whose stories are told through watercolours as well as a series of panels from Liang’s picture books.
Altogether, the exhibits present something deeper upon further inspection. It is not only for young visitors, but also adults and the children they once were. It also particularly highlights a bond between father and son, with information displayed at the gallery highlighting the importance of a father’s love during Liang’s upbringing and in becoming a parent himself and its subsequent stages, citing the former’s impact. The statement pointed out that the bond between father and son is therefore not only highlighted, but amplified in this exhibition.
Picture books are an important part of Liang’s works, the statement added, noting that he believes that “only when one is mature enough are they qualified to write stories for children.” His stories are easily understood by children while inspiring introspection in adults, offering humour and child-like spirit alongside a “gentle philosophy” that encourages reflection on life, emotion, and growth, according to the statement.
Liang also believes that “a good picture book is not about teaching people what to think, but rather about thinking along with them”, as noted in the exhibition statement.
The title work showcased in the exhibition is “ANGEL”, which features four interconnected panels reflecting a core truth: though we ultimately navigate life alone, the people who support us through hardships leave us with an enduring inner strength. We carry this strength to make our own path, and we turn every encounter and farewell into a lasting part of who we are, the statement highlighted.
One can visit the free-admission exhibition until September 15, being open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. The gallery is located at 10 Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro.
