The Public Security Police Force (PSP) have arrested a male student from the Chinese mainland for taking photos of a woman inside a public ladies’ toilet, PSP spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong said the suspect, surnamed Liu, is in his 20s. Wong added that the victim is a female mainland Chinese student also in her twenties.
According to Wong, on Friday afternoon, while using a cubicle in the toilet of a university library, the victim noticed that someone in the adjacent cubicle was using a mobile phone to take photos beneath the partition.
Wong did not identify the university.
She immediately reported the incident to the police, Wong said, adding that upon arrival, PSP officers identified Liu using surveillance footage and subsequently intercepted him in his dormitory.
Liu admitted to the offence, claiming that he had failed to notice the gender sign upon entering the toilet. He added that once inside, he acted on a “momentary impulse” to photograph the victim in the adjacent cubicle, according to Wong.
Liu said he had deleted the photos after being discovered. Police examined his mobile phone and computer and found suspicious photos or videos. The victim and the suspect were not acquainted.
Liu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on suspicion of invasion of privacy.
Under Article 186 of the Macau Penal Code, invasion of privacy is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment.
