Public Security Police Force (PSP) spokesman Lei Chan Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday that a male student splashed his female teacher with drain cleaner that morning.
According to Lei, at around 8:00 a.m. yesterday, the incident occurred at a school on Rua de Pedro Coutinho (高地烏街).
The 18-year-old male student at the school used a bottle of drain cleaner to splash the teacher in her sixties inside a classroom, causing burns to multiple parts of her body, Lei said, adding that the student also sustained burns to his hands. Neither was in a life-threatening condition, and both were taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre (CHCSJ) for treatment, according to Lei.
The teacher suffered burns to her face, left eye, left side of her neck, left side of her chest, and both forearms, with burns covering 17 percent of her body, Lei said, adding that there was no immediate danger to her life, but further examination was needed to determine whether her vision is affected.
The case has been handed over to the Judiciary Police (PJ) for follow-up.
After the PSP press conference, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) issued a statement confirming that the school involved in the case is Saint John de Brito School.
The school is run by Caritas Macau.
Upon learning of the incident, the bureau immediately coordinated with the school to initiate crisis management measures and, together with the school, provided care for the injured and support to their families, the statement said, adding that the specific details of the incident are currently under investigation by the relevant entities.
PJ spokeswoman Leong Sok Man also said that PJ officers have taken over the case. As at the time of the press conference both were still receiving treatment in the hospital, the information available for the investigation was limited and further investigation was required, Leong said, adding that the information and evidence will be released to the public in due course.
