The Judiciary Police (PJ) have arrested a 56-year-old local man surnamed Kou for cheating 50 workers from the mainland out of 120,000 yuan in a job referral scam, a PJ spokesperson said yesterday.
According to the spokesperson, a man and a woman who are job agents in the mainland reported to the police on May 31 that Kou had cheated them.
The duo told the police that Kou claimed that he was undertaking a big construction project in Macau and needed to hire a large number of non-local workers. He even showed them a signed contract for the project, and said each worker had to pay 2,000 yuan as a service fee.
